Canterbury Writers is an online community of writers from around the world with majority of members residing in New Zealand. Our community has grown significantly in the last few years, and we are now seeking volunteers to help monitor activities on our Discord server and to host regular write-in sessions.
Job Location:
Online (Discord server for Canterbury Writers)
Pay / Renumeration:
This is a volunteer (unpaid) position with Canterbury Writers.
What is involved with this role:
Volunteers will be expected to:
- monitor communications on the Canterbury Writers Discord server and respond to inappropriate behaviour;
- host write-ins on the Canterbury Writers Discord server (frequency and times are determined by the applicant, but subject to approval from the Canterbury Writers administration team);
- maintain open communication with the Canterbury Writers administration team regarding personal writing commitments and how this impacts on the duties as a Forum Moderator and Write-In Host;
- attend moderator planning meetings once a quarter (once every 3 months) as we plan for popular writing events throughout the year;
- and help to promote and support the community on the Canterbury Writers Discord server.
Write-In Requirements:
On the Discord server, we have a dedicated chat channel for virtual write-in. However, successful applicants may wish to utilize the voice channels on the server instead. The times selected for the write-ins must be consistent, even if no one else shows up. The successful applicants will be given the opportunity to choose the times for their hosted write-ins for themselves. It is recommended that applicants choose a time that works for their own writing when they intend to write anyway.
All forum moderators will be consulted during server reviews, giving moderators the opportunity to introduce new channels to the server based on the community’s needs and review the server rules for the benefit of the community.
Successful applicants will also be encouraged to contribute to the blog on the main Canterbury Writers website and the Canterbury Writers newsletter. All moderators are also encouraged to post informative articles on the Canterbury Writers Discord server to spark conversation among the community.
All forum moderators and write-in hosts will report directly to Judy L Mohr (main administrator for Canterbury Writers).
Qualifications Required:
Applicants need to be writers, but do not need a publication history. The passion for writing is what is sought.
Applicants must have been active members of the Canterbury Writers Discord server for at least four (4) months. It is positive engagement with other members that is highly sought after.
Applicants must be willing to commit to at least one (1) weekly timeslot for their hosted write-in, which is of at least 60 minutes in duration. Multiple writing slots throughout the week are welcome. Moderation activities of the server can be restricted to those times when the successful applicant is on the server.
Additional Information:
All successful applicants will be given the training needed on how to use the Discord server and the tools at their disposal.
All forum moderators and write-in hosts will report directly to Judy L Mohr (main administrator for Canterbury Writers).
