Facebook Group Moderator (Volunteer Position)

Canterbury Writers is an online community of writers from around the world with majority of members residing in New Zealand. Our community has grown significantly in the last few years, and we are now seeking volunteers to help monitor our various online activities.

Job Location:

Online (Canterbury Writers Facebook group)

Pay / Renumeration:

This is a volunteer (unpaid) position with Canterbury Writers.

What is involved with this role:

Volunteers will be expected to:

  • monitor communications on the Canterbury Writers Facebook group and respond to inappropriate behaviour;
  • post participation threads to encourage engagement among members (types of posts and frequency are determined by the applicant, but subject to approval from the Canterbury Writers administration team);
  • maintain open communication with the Canterbury Writers administration team regarding personal writing commitments and how this impacts on the duties as a Facebook Group Moderator;
  • attend moderator planning meetings once a quarter (once every 3 months) as we plan for popular writing events throughout the year;
  • and help to promote and support the community on the Canterbury Writers Facebook group.

Engagement Post Requirements:

The Canterbury Writers Facebook group has been left neglected for some time, so engagement has plummeted to near-zero levels. A large portion of this role is to encourage engagement among the group members. The nature of the posts and the frequency must be consistent, even if no one is engaging... but some willingness to experiment is also needed. The successful applicants will be given the opportunity to devise their own "engagement" strategy (subject to approval from the admin of Canterbury Writers). It is recommended that applicants choose ideas that fit their personalities and the level of commitment that they are prepared to make for this, keeping in mind that their own writing is also important.

Group moderators will be consulted during Facebook reviews, giving moderators the opportunity to introduce new post threads based on the community’s needs and review the group rules for the benefit of the community.

Successful applicants will also be encouraged to contribute to the blog on the main Canterbury Writers website and the Canterbury Writers newsletter. All moderators are also encouraged to post informative articles on the Canterbury Writers Facebook group to spark conversation among the community.

All group moderators will report directly to Judy L Mohr (main administrator for Canterbury Writers).

Qualifications Required:

Applicants need to be writers, but do not need a publication history. The passion for writing is what is sought.

Applicants must have their own Facebook accounts. They do not need to be a member of the Canterbury Writers Facebook group to start with, but evidence of familiarity of the platform in general is desired. (You do not need to have been a moderator of a group previously. Training in group moderation tools will be provided.)

Applicants must be willing to commit to posting at least one (1) weekly regular post, attempting to encourage engagement. These posts can be scheduled. Multiple weekly posts are welcome. Moderation activities of the server can be restricted to those times when the successful applicant is on Facebook.

Additional Information:

All successful applicants will be given the training needed on how to use the moderation tools available within Facebook.

All group moderators will report directly to Judy L Mohr (main administrator for Canterbury Writers).
